Avo

2019

An interactive iOS adventure, made by entertainment technology startup, Playdeo.

Defining a new format for storytelling.

Avo is the story of an avocado, brought to life by a brilliant young inventor, Billie. It was the first title from Playdeo—a startup working at the intersection of software, interface design, and storytelling. For two years I worked on the creative development of our products, editing our in-game video, and prototyping new IP.

Avo — Episode 1 Playthrough
“Imagine a kids' TV favourite, but you can reach into the screen and control bits of the action. You've almost got Avo—a clever 'playable TV' adventure powered by some really impressive technology.”

How we made Avo.

Avo was shot in live-action video, where the entire set was 3D-scanned and each shot tracked to then be brought into Unity. Our pipeline was a unique mix of different software and custom tools, developed to make video with touchable depth possible.

My Role at Playdeo.

The opportunity of working at a startup meant that I got to wear many hats, contributing to the stories, processes, and format behind Playdeo’s products. Some days this looked like editing scripts, creating animatics, and working on set—other days I’d be editing cut-scenes in Resolve, creating marketing material, or interfacing with game developers and software engineers to coordinate video handover.

Reach and Recognition.

Avo went on to have nearly 4 million downloads on the App Store, and was recognised by The Design Museum’s Beazley Designs of the Year in 2019. I’m really proud to have contributed to the stories, processes, and format behind Playdeo’s products, and to have taken part in defining a new genre of entertainment.
